The Fifth Annual SONIC Conference.

FELS and Lung Ultrasound in Paediatric Emergencies

I'm an FRACP FACEM and have been a passionate POCUS practitioner since 2010. I am Clinical Lead Ultrasound at Qld Children's Hospital where we are finally making headway with understanding and implementing PEM POCUS. As I live in Northern NSW, COVID disrupted this work but gave me the opportunity both to develop a Special Skills position within the mixed ED at Lismore Base Hospital and also to undertake DDU training, both of which have been stressful but immensely satisfying.

About my talk

Focused echo in life support and lung ultrasound are well established in ACEM practice but their utility in paediatric emergencies is less broadly understood. This presentation describes the use of focussed lung and cardiac ultrasound in the bedside evaluation of 4 critically ill infants and children across a range of different pathological conditions. I will also discuss tips and pitfalls for adult POCUS practitioners when modifying their techniques for paediatric emergencies.
